The Gold Coast Football Club, commonly known as the Gold Coast Suns, was established in 2009 and is part of the Australian Football League (AFL). The club was founded by the Gold Coast Football Club Ltd, with significant involvement from former AFL player and coach, and the club’s inaugural CEO, Travis Auld. The Suns began competing in the AFL in the 2011 season, aiming to promote Australian rules football in the Gold Coast region.

Richmond was founded in 1885. It joined the AFL (then called the VFL) in 1908.
Fremantle Dockers, and the new teams, West Sydney and Goldcoast - all teams of only the most recent of years. So, in essence, there have been no complete 'failures' in that respect. However, there are still two clubs which, despite their long VFL/AFL histories, have only won the flag once - St. Kilda Saints and the Western Bulldogs.

From what I have seen on the net the current AFL was founded in 1959. However two other AFL leagues were in existence before that with the first in 1926. They both folded due to poor revenue.
Lamar Hunt founded the Kansas City Chiefs in 1960 which was the first team in the new American Football League.
