The first verse, "Hearts to hearts" and so on, originates from a piece called "Australia, heart to heart and hand to hand". Most of the lyrics are the same.
For the second verse, "out we come, out we come, out we come to play" and so on, the origins are, unfortuanately, unknown. It is believed that it was added by a member of the NMFC at some point.
The third verse, and the best known, "Join in the chorus", stems from a Scottish folk song, "Just a wee doech an' Doris", about drinking.
