For the Quraish, they thought they were losing power when Muhammad (saw) turned more people to Islam, so they thought that the only way to make them disappear was to banish them from Makkah. The other reason was that people felt insulted when Islam came and the last prophet said that idol worshipping is not right. They felt insulted that he was questioning their beliefs.
