The matador uses a cape, either the capote or muleta, as a lure and decoy to attract the bull. The bull has never before encountered a man on foot and assumes the cape is part of the man and charges at its motion. However, the bull quickly learns that he is being deceived and if the animal is not killed within a short time, the matador will be in serious trouble.

Most wear rose colored stocking as it has always been the traditional color. However, there is no rule that says they have to wear that color. Matador Jesus Solorzano wore a variety of colors, including green, just to be different.

It is just the custom. Rose colored stockings are not required, however. Former matador Jesus Solorzano from Mexico was noted for wearing almost any color stockings - green seeming to be his favorite color

The costume, called a traje de luces (suit of lights) has been traditional for many years. It is not a dress. It is very tight fitting so no loose parts of it will get snagged on the horns of the bull. The rose colored stockings are also traditional but there is no rule that they be of that color. Matador Jesus Solorzano was a bit of a non-conformist and would often wear green or some other color during the corrida.
