Muhammad Ali originally was introduced to the idea of boxing, at age 12, when he was known as, Cassius Clay.

In 1954, Ali (Clay) attended an annual convention of the Louisville Service Club, at the Columbia Auditorium, arriving on his brand new, $60.00, red & white, Schwinn bicycle. After he left the convention, he discovered his new bike had been stolen, and was quite verbal about what should happen to the bicycle thief, if caught. A tearful and angry Ali (Clay) was directed to the basement of the Columbia Auditorium, to speak to a white police officer by the name of Joe Martin. Martin, was manning a boxing gym, in the basement, listened to Ali's (Clay's) demands for a state wide hunt for his bike, asked Ali (Clay), whether or not he could fight, (to which Ali (Clay) said, no.) further advised the hot tempered 12 year old, to come around to the gym, and learn how to fight. Ali (Clay) took Martin's advice and by the time he was 17 years old, he had won six Kentucky Golden Gloves championships, two national Golden Gloves titles, and two AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) crowns.

In the summer of 1960, Ali (Clay) had won the Olympic gold-medal in the Light-Heavy weight category. The same year, he returned to his hometown of Louisville, in Kentucky, and was refused service by a waitress, at a "whites-only" restaurant, leaving he fights with a white gang; disgusted, as racism overshadowed any image of an Olympic gold medal, winner for the US, resulting in Ali throwing his gold medal into the Ohio River. By the end of 1960, Ali had signed a contract with the Louisville Sponsoring Group, as a Professional Boxer.
