Rocky Marciano

Jack Dempsey

Jack Dempsey, though a battler whom many feared to face, did lose to Gene Tunney. In 49 fights, Marciano was never beaten, though he did win a controversial split-decision against another white boxer named Roland La Starza. But there were also a number of excellent white pugilists in other weight divisions. Gene Fullmer and Carman Basilio in the welterweight/middleweight ranks were worthy champions in the 1950's. Jake LaMotta has become far more famous than he was during his fighting career, mainly from the release of the movie Raging Bull. But man-for-man, the list of famous black boxers far outshines the list of famous white boxers.
