There are a number of Karate fighters still alive who were the best in their time; and, they still work out. Chuck Norris, Bill "Superfoot" Wallace, Joe Lewis, Mike Stone, Steven Segal (not as well known at the time the others were fighting). Look into the history of these Karate men and I think you will find it interesting. These are just a very few I can think of. I know there are a lot more out there.
Considering the wide number of centuries and the inability to even know some of the historical karate-ka it would be only an opinion.
