'Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee' was how Muhammad Ali described his boxing style; he would dance around the ring lightly on his toes, first this way and then that, making his opponent have to follow him (that's the float part) but the opponent never knew when that gloved fist would shoot out and land in his face (that's the sting part).
i believe it was his cornerman drew bundini brown who coined the phrase, probably back in '63 or 64.
