The first official Scrabble tournament was on March 18, 1973, which was open only to Brooklyn residents.

On May 19 through May 21, 1978, the first nationaltournament was the North American Invitational.

In 1980, the National Scrabble Championship was officially named and passed on to The National Scrabble Association.

To this date, 2009, The National Scrabble Championship is still being held, but it's being organized under a different organization, called North American Scrabble Players Association.
