Won Kwang Bopsa was a Buddhist Priest who created a system of martial arts called Um-Yang Kwan in the early part of the Three Kingdoms period. At the time, what is now Korea was divided into three kingdoms, the smallest of which was Silla, on the South-Eastern tip of the peninsula. The system he created was the basis of physical skill for an elite youth group called the Hwarang, or "Flower Men". The Hwarang warriors trained in many aspects of martial skill as well as cultural arts and sciences and were leaders and generals in the Silla kingdom.
Taekwondo (태권도) is the modern name of the Korean national martial art which was chosen as an umbrella title on April 11, 1955. There is no other name for Taekwondo, however it is often translated from Korean Hangeul with several different variations such as: Taekwondo, Tae Kwon Do, Taekwon-Do, Taegwondo. Earlier terms that were used during the post WWII era to describe Korean self defense included Tangsudo (aka: Tang Soo Do - variation of Chinese hand), Taesudo, Kongsudo. Modern Taekwondo was influenced by several Chinese and Japanese systems, but is primarily formed around its ancient native Korean roots in what was known as Subak, Tae Kkyeon, and the philosophy of leadership/warrior training of Korea's Hwarang Knights.
