Early in his career, Flair used the elbow drop as his finisher. It was during this time that he perfected his flying knee drop and the walk around suplex where he would pick his opponent up in the air, hold them there for several seconds, walk around the ring, the drop them, both moves that became trademarks of his matches in the 80's and 90's.

It wasn't until the plane crash that nearly killed him in 1975 that Flair states he changed to the figure four leg lock as his finisher, because this was when he adpoted the Nature Boy persona that would become his signature. That persona, complete with the bleach blond hair and the womanizing, partying persona was made famous by Buddy Rogers in the 1960's.

Flair stated he took the figure four because it was Rogers move and it made sense if you were going to adopt the look to adopt the move as well.
