"hell-roarer" is a US-built system for field-illumination, using a continuous fuel/magnesium dust-flame. The system was airbourne, carried like fuel-containers under the wings of an aircraft an could provide 15 minutes of continuous illumination over an area of about 5 miles for reconaissance or battlefield-illumination. It was developed and used during the Korean War 1951-1953.
