He wasn't. On April 28, 1967, Muhammad Ali refused to be inducted into the army, even though he had been drafted. As a Muslim, he said he was religiously opposed to military service. He was convicted of draft evasion, and sentenced to five years in prison; but he appealed his sentence, and did not serve any time while the appeal was pending. Ultimately, his conviction was overturned, so he never went to jail.
