Tyson was not i a right frame of mind during those days, and in his mind, he was responding to the elbows he received from holyfield.

That does not excuse his behaviour though, but I think we understand his mind set a little better.

He never bit it "off"

There were two bites total. The first resulted in a 2 point deduction, the second resulted in a fight stoppage. The second bite was the famous one that we see most of the pictures of.

Evander Holyfield; in the 1997 rematch. Mike was disqualified for biting off a piece of Holyfield's ear and his license was revoked. In 1999 Tyson regained his boxing license and returned to the ring.
