Jiu Jitsu is a grappling art and bases its attacks on the ground utilizing chokes, joint locks, sweeps and throws. Basically JJ takes the fight to the ground (where most street fights end up eventually) and shows its superiority.

Most martial art are striking focused, be it punches, kicks, elbows, knees etc.

They all have their advantages. The reality is that most of the arts work effectively when done by a skilled practitioner. And all arts combine striking and grappling, it is just a matter of what they focus on.
