Very simple. First you think about what kind of weapon you know you can handle. It would be very idiotic for a small person to pick up a sword that is heavier than what they can handle or lift (unless that is your prerogative). Then judge for yourself what style of fighting would best suit your needs: Bushido, Fencing or anything dealing with your weapon specifically. After you have thought about what you need you just have to find someone who can teach you the right way. Aside from that, you can do it the old fashioned way: wooden swords and self practice with reference materials.

There's no fun in playing it safe. Why not try something a little unhinged?

Take kung foo classes. Ask someone if they can help you find a king foo class. Or you can just ask Google.com a question like that.
