In 1962, Georgetown University made its mascot the English bulldog after a group of students presented the valid claim that Georgetown University students and bulldogs shared a common personality trait in their tenacity. Those same students bought a young bulldog that was to become a fixture in Georgetown culture and named it "Jack" after it refused to answer to the initial choice of "Hoya". Eventually, the dog retired and was soon replaced by a student in a bulldog suit, but in 1999 a group of spirited seniors initiated a "Bring Jack Back" campaign and brought a new dog to campus. In 2003, this Jack's owner became the president of the University of Scranton, once again forcing student's to conduct a new search for the Most Valuable Bulldog. The new Jack is still on campus, rooming with Fr. Steck, S.J.,an Associate Professor in the Department of Theology.
