It depends upon the league/sport. In the NFL, for example, the team with the best overall record wins their division. In the event of a tie, the division record acts as the tiebreaker. I believe the best conference record wins the conference in NCAA Football, regardless of overall record. Then there are the league like the NHL, where a team earns 2 points for a win, 1 for a tie or post regulation loss--with the team accumulating the most points winning their division/conference.
Best College football record over the last 5 years
The Michigan Wolverines have the best record of any school in all divisions of college football history.
That means that person has the best record for a specific sport at the Olympics. It is contrasted with the World Record, which is the fastest or best ever. It is entirely possible for them to be the same. The World record will always be better or the same as the Olympic Record.
There is no required win-lose record to get in the playoffs. The team with the best overall record in the division goes on to the playoffs. If there are teams that are tied with the best overall record there will be a tie breaker which is the best in division record. EX: Team Overall record Division Record New York Giants 9-7 3-3 Dallas Cowboys 8-8 2-4 Philadelphia Eagles 8-8 5-1 Washington Redskins 5-11 2-4
finish with the best overall record
Chicago Bears
For playoff purposes. The team in a conference with the best overall record is the No. 1. A playoff team with the weakest overall conference record is the No. 6 seed.

In most cases, the division winner with the best overall season record plays the wildcard team and the other two division winners play each other. But, in the case where the wildcard team and the division winner with the best overall record come from the same division, the division winner with the second overall best record plays the wildcard team and the division winner with the best overall record plays the division winner with the third best overall record. Confusing? Kinda, and kinda not really fair either, but MLB does not want two teams from the same division playing each other in the first round of the playoffs.
