The phrase March Madness was first officially coined in a 1939 article in the Illinois High School Athlete magazine article by H. V. Porter, although the phrase had reportedly been in use with the Illinois High School Association's Basketball program since 1908. It wasn't until 1982, when Brent Musburger used it during a broadcast of an NCAA tournament, that it was widely recognized and used to reference the latter part of the College Basketball season.
