It's very much a violation of NCAA rules for college athletes to be "paid." Any school that paid its players, or even allowed someone else (such as an alumnus) to pay them, would be potentially facing severe penalties.
Colleges can provide scholarships. A very recent (as of this writing) change allows them to also provide food for their players. Anything beyond that is verboten.
Becuase NCAA is a college team and people who play sports for college don't get paid.
