Technology is a big reason. Kids now would rather play a video game, pretending to be Ken Griffey Jr., than look at him on a piece of cardboard. There is not the demand for the cards as much as their used to be. Also the economy is not the greatest, and people dont have the extra money to spend on Baseball cards.
Age has nothing to do with value. The value of a collectible such as a sports card is based on supply and demand. If there are more collectors than the number of items in the market, then the value rises. If the number of collectors is lower than the number of items in the market then the value lowers.
Although there are some new cards that are worth more than some older cards, the older cards (pre 1980's or pre war cards) have a higher value because of scarcity. The newer cards with high value will most likely come down in value as the demand dies down.
