I found a Baseball card signed by Boog Powell in my uncle's things packed away in the attic. It is in good condition and sealed in a plastic case. On the back is the number 143 and it says Power hitting was always Boog Powell's stock in trade, even when he was coming up through the minor leagues. In 1959 after, he received a $25,000 bonus, he broke in as a young left fielder with Bluefield of the Appalachian League. Boog smashed homers in only 56 games, knocked in 59 and posted a sparkling .351 batting average. That earned him a promotion to Fox Cities where he produced 13 more homers, 100 RBI's and a .312 average. But both those seasons pale in comparison to Powell's monster 1961 year. He tore up the International League, Leading the loop in total bases (288) and homers (32); smashing 26 doubles and hitting .321. This earned Powell a shot at the bigs. And even an.077 average in 13 end-of-season at-bats wasn't enough to keep him down. My question is...Is it worth anything or should I hold onto it and pass it down thruogh the family ?
