Dale Earnhardt did drive a #8 Goodwrench Nova from 1986-1988 in the Busch Grand National Series.... now Nationwide Series....
Dale Sr. was driving the black #3 GM Goodwrench car when he died on February 18, 2001.
Currently, there are no plans for either Dale Jr. or RCR to bring the black #3 GM Goodwrench Chevy back to the race track. Dale Jr. just won the Nationwide Series race at Daytona this year on July 2, driving the #3 Wrangler car in honor of his Dad. Bittersweet victory.
The ignition timing is set on a GM Goodwrench 350 engine by bringing the number one piston to top dead center. The distributor rotor is then pointed to the number one piston, a timing light connected, and the rotor turned until the correct timing is reached.
Dale Jr. drove the #3 in the Busch Series, now known as the Nationwide Series back in 1998 and 1999. He has also driven that car number in a few races since then. The black Goodwrench #3 has never been driven since Dale Sr's death in 2001.

Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s father was Ralph Earnhardt. Ralph was a racer himself and competed in various events, but he is best known for driving car number 8. Dale Earnhardt Sr. often credited his father for inspiring his own racing career.
