Starboard (right) side
When on a boat, facing towards the bow, the starboard side is on the right. The port side is on the left. The colours used for starboard is green, and port is red.

That may be a standard practice among boaters you have seen, and there might even be a reason behind it. But I have seen countless boats with trolling motors on the stern next to the main engine, and they were on the port side just as often as the starboard.
Always on the Starboard side of the transom on every boat
"Hard 'a starboard" refers to a Helm Command, not a rudder command. The "Helm" (or tiller) is moved to the starboard side, when the ship is turned left. It's a British term.
