The fastest transpacific passage from Yokohama to San Francisco was set by the Sealand - McClean in the early 1970s. This was one of the SL-7 class of container ships. They remain the fastest cargo ships ever built and at the time were the largest container ships ever built.

I sailed on the sister ship the Sealand Resource as an Able Seaman in 1980. This class of ships were bought by the Military Sealift Command in the mid 1980s and converted to Roll On / Roll Off ships.

I am sorry that I don't have the exact date and speed. It would have been in excess of 30 knots!
