Tri's have a tendency to give you more open deck for the weight. The Cabin Space to Weight ratio is a little worse than cats or mono-hulls in that more structural material is required to maintain three hulls instead of two (or one). Lateral resistance is greater, as is drag, so they're harder to tack, but need less of (or no) keel. Some complex pyhsics come into pay when you calculate hull speed, so I can't answer that one here. Tri's are a more stable but less forgiving platform. If they turtle, they're stable in that position too, and thus very hard to right. Overall, and for these reasons, I personally would go with the cat, and I think most (but surely not all) people would too.

When boats have two or more hulls?

Two hulls - catamaran Three hulls - trimaran

How many hulls does catamaran does?

It generally has two hulls, but can range from anywhere from 2 or more from a catamaran to a trimaran. There is even a quadaran. Catamarans look the best. Unless you want bigger. But in this case bigger isn't always better.

What sort of transport is a trimaran and why is it so named?

A trimaran is a boat, either sail or engine-driven, that has three seperate hulls beneath the superstructure- like a catamaran but with three keels instead of two. It's name is because it has 3 hulls.

What is a characteristic of a catamaran?

A catamaran hull is one having either dual hulls or a main hull and secondary hull (three hulls is a trimaran). Like an outrigger canoe, having a dual base in the water means that a catamaran is usually more stable than a single hull. The reduction in the "roll" of the hull can result in a smoother ride.

What boat or sail boat should you use to travel around the world?

This is really a matter of opinion, but a catamaran or trimaran does provide a more stable platform in rough seas, such as are encountered in the Southern latitudes.
