One assumes you are referring to sailing craft, okay- assuming fore-and-aft rig, one could have a Yawl- after mast always shorter than the main, called the Mizzen mast and only one sail to aid in steering and maneuvering, a Ketch- which has the after mast more inboard but still shorter than the main mast, a schooner- both masts of equal height- many sails- and normally after mast is the same height or larger- taller. there are two different basic types of Schooner- the Gaff schooner- like the Bluenose or the Marconi schooner- yes the Radio man was also a yachtsman- with more triangular shaped sails. two masted square riggers are the Brig and brigantine- like the famous (Yankee) of Captain Irving Johnson.
