Usually you would use either a lambswool or medium pile mohair roller. Foam rollers are only for Topcoats generally, or maybe the very thin film racing antifouling such as VC17m or VC Offshore by International. Worth having a couple of types of roller with you, and see which works the best accoring to the smoothness or roughness of your hull.

The Foam Roller?

Looking for an inexpensive piece of fitness equipment that can massage your muscles, loosen them, and increase your flexibility? Then, you may want your next purchase to be a foam roller. Never heard of it? Well, it is basically a log made out of foam. They come short and long, and even sliced in half. You can buy them very cheap, or you can spend a little more for a better quality roller, and I do recommend that, especially if you are over 150 pounds. The great thing about foam rollers is that you don't need anyone to help you use it. For example, if you have a tight hamstring, or outer thigh, you can position yourself on the roller and your body weight, along with the movement you provide, can massage and loosen those muscles for you. These rollers were designed for self-use. They are used for a special technique called, Self-Myofascial Release (SMR). Myofascia is basically a tissue wrapped around your muscle, and the foam roller can help to loosen this tissue and relieve pain and discomfort. By applying tension with your body weight on the roller, your muscles respond by relaxing, as a mechanism to prevent injury. You can use a foam roller to perform SMR on your entire body. Literally, from your feet to your neck the foam log will make your entire body feel better. A quick search on the internet can provide you with instructions on how to perform the SMR on different parts of your body. The heavier you are the more you may feel the roller working, but you will also have more work to do in moving your body back and forth with the roller. Plan to work up a sweat if you are going to massage your entire body. An added bonus of the foam roller, especially if you buy a very dense one, is that it can be used for balance training, along with the half foam rollers, which have one flat side. You can also find balance exercises for the foam roller with a quick search on the internet. Check to see if your local gym has a foam roller and try it out. Or, you may be able to 'test drive' one in a sports store.
