The sides of a ship are the hull. The top of the hull are the gunwales (pronounced gunnels). A ship could be loaded to the gunwales (low in the water).
There is one on each side, port and starboard.
The lines drawn around the hull of a ship near the water-line is called a "Plimsoll line". This horizontal line is easily seen when the ship is empty and therefore riding higher out of the water. The more cargo loaded into ship the deeper it sinks into the water, and a ship can only be loaded with cargo etc down to this line and no furthur. Before its introduction there was no safe-loading-line on a vessel to prevent overloading by unscrupulous owners.
If you aboard the ship and you face toward the front of the ship, the port side is the left side of the ship. So, the port side of a ship would show the port light.
In the oldest of sailing days the left side of the ship was called the "larboard" side. The right side was "steorbord" which is now "Starboard", it said that the name came literally from the side of the ship was steered from. larboard was too easily confused in high winds or loud sounds with starboard, so it was changed to "port side" which was the side of the ship cargo was loaded on from the docks.
there is a line on the side of the ship, as the cargo is loaded the ship sinks deeper into the water, when the the reaches the water, they must stop loading. That is the low tech method, nowadays with computers, shipping companies know down to the pound what has been loaded onto the ship. The computers are even smart enough to load containers that will be need first onto the top so they can be unloaded easier.
...Is "aport": On a ship, while facing forward, the left side of the ship is called "port" and the right side of the ship is called "starboard".
Pronounced gunnel, the word is properly spelt gunwale in standard Englsh. This refers to the upper edge of the side of a boat, and is usually used in the plural.... the ship was loaded to the gunwales with treasure.
Fly the plane onto a huge ship or an aircraft carrier. Paint a mark on the side of the ship to indicate the water level. Then fly the plane off of the ship, and replace it will increasing amounts of known weight. Continue to add weight until the ship sinks to the same water level that you marked on the side. Then you will know the weight of the plane.
The left side of a ship or plane.
The right side of a ship is called the star-board side.
It is dangerous for a ship to be too lightly loaded because then it floats with less volume inside water. As a result, its centre of gravity is higher and it may get blown over on its side by strong winds. Therefore, an unloaded ship is filled with sand or stones, called ballast,at its bottom. This lowers its centre of gravity so that the equilibrium of ship becomes more stable.
