Wigan was a Roman town, believed to be 'Cocium' Many historians have disagreed with this, however in the last few years, digging the foundations for a new shopping centre, a find ( identified by Manchester and Oxford Universities ) of a Roman Bath House, gave evidence to support the hypothesis that Wigan was home to some very high ranking Romans and therefore was more than a roadside stopover ( as proclaimed by some )
