It was created in 1983 By two men who wanted to see young children who couldn't keep the Bowling ball out of the gutter. the two men put wood planks in the the gutter, preventing the bowl from going in and the children had a ball. They never got recongnition for it, but I know this to be true, because i was one of the men. This is NOT accurate. I invented bumpers for bowling alley gutters in 1967 as a mechanical engineering project while attending Engineering School at The University of Miami, Florida.

Bowling alley bumpers are used to help young children get the ball too the pins. Most alleys have them and will install them when asked.
They are placed in the lane gutters. Depending on the center, they may have automatic or semi-automatic lane bumpers which are mounted in the gutters or sides.
