Landry played one season for the New York Yanks (1949) and six seasons for the New York Giants (1950-1955) before becoming the Giants defense coordinator in 1956. He held that position for four seasons before becoming the Dallas Cowboys first head coach in 1960.
Tom Landry played College Football at the University of Texas. After graduation, he played for one year for the New York Yankees of the AAFL. After that, he played for the New York Giants football team in the NFL. After his playing career ended, he was the Giants' defensive coordinator until 1960, when he became head coach for the Dallas Cowboys.
There is an old saying that NFL teams take on the personalities of their coaches. That was true for Landry's players during and after their careers.
"He shaped my philosophy on everything," said Landry protege Dan Reeves after the longtime head coach's death in February 2000. "I followed his philosophy on football and how he handled himself on and off the field. He was a tremendous influence on me.
"He was something unique to the NFL. He was someone who had tremendous knowledge of the NFL, but he was also a man of such integrity. He had a strong Christian faith that was unusual at that time. And he didn't just talk it. He walked it, too."
