Zion is a place name often used as a synonym for Jerusalem. The word is first found in Samuel II, 5:7. It commonly referred to a specific mountain (perhaps hill would be more accurate) near Jerusalem (Mount Zion), just outside the original walled city and long-since engulfed by the city.
