The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) started in 1972 by male tennis players who were dissatisfied with the way the tour had been run up to that point, including the lack of prize money to any but the top few players. The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) started almost the same way in 1973. Refer to the ATP and WTA links, below, for further information.
