Terry Fox first dipped his artificial leg into the Atlantic Ocean in April of 1980, and began his cross-Canada Marathon of Hope in St. John's Newfoundland. He continued from here through PEI, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, and ended in Thunder Bay, Ontario on September 1, 1980. He was forced to stop here because the cancer had spread to his lungs.
