American Football Positions that can have more than one player on the field at a time:
Offense:
Left/Right Guard: Inner set of offensive linemen, block and protects the ball carrier
Left/Right Tackle: Outer pair of offensive linemen, block and protect the ball carrier
Half Back/Running Back: Usually lines up behing the QB. teams can run an offense with an empty backfield, a 1 back set, a 2 back set (the I formation HB/RB) or even a 3 back set (Wishbone Formation 1 HB/2RB)
Wide Receiver: player who catches passes thrown by the quarterback. Usually runs a pattern called a route annd tries to penetrate into the defenses secondary before catching the ball. Teams can employ a 1 to 5 wide receiver set, depending on what they need to accomplish.
Tight End: A receiver who sometimes blocks or a lineman who sometimes catches passes. The tight end is a versatile player who performs a number of roles in the game. Team usually run a 1 tight end offense, but more recently two tight end sets have become more commonplace. They usually line up just outside the offensive tackle.
Defense:
Defensive Tackle: In a 4-3 defense, there are two tackles on the field. They rush the offense, tying to disrupt whatever play the offense has called. The Tackles are located in the innder positions on the defensive line.
Defensive End: Like the defensive tackles, the defensive ends rush the offensive line, trying to disrupt the offense. There are usually two ends on the field at all times. The occupy the outer ositions on the defensive line.
Linebackers: There are usually 3 or 4 linebackers on the field at all times. In a 3-4 defense, there are four linebackers. In a 4-3, there are three linebackers. The linebackers line up behind the defensive line.
Defensive Backs: There are usually four defensive backs on the field at all times. These are two cornerbacks, the free safety and the strong safety. These players are responsible for stopping or hindeirng theoffensive passing game and make tackles of the passes are complete.
