There are four main subdivisions to the colon. The ascending colon, the transverse colon, the descending colon, and the sigmoid colon. The ascending colon travels up the right side of the abdomen until it reaches the level of the right kidney. It then turns at a right angle (known as the right colic flexure) and travels across the abdominal cavity as the transverse colon. It then bends at a right angle again (known as the left colic flexure) and continues down the left side of the abdomen as the descending colon. The colon then enters the pelvis and becomes the 's' shaped sigmoid colon.
The colon is subdivided into three regions: ascending colon, transverse colon, and descending colon. The ascending colon runs vertically on the right side of the abdomen, the transverse colon crosses horizontally from right to left, and the descending colon descends vertically on the left side of the abdomen.
Right upper quadrant - liver: right lobe, gallbladder, stomach: pylorus, doudenum: part 1-3, pancreas: head, right suprarenal gland, right kidney, right colic (hepatic) flexure, ascending colon: superior part, transverse colon: right half Left upper quadrant - liver: left lobe, spleen, stomach, jejunum and proximal ileum, pancreas: body and tail, left kidney, left suprarenal gland, left colic (splenic) flexure, transverse colon: left half, descending colon: superior half Right lower quadrant - cecum, vermiform appendix, most of ileum, ascending colon: inferior part, right ovary, right uterine tube, right ureter: abdominal part, right spermatic cord: abdominal part, uterus (if enlarged), urinary bladder (if very full) Left lower quadrant - sigmoid colon, descending colon: inferior part, left ovary, left uterine tube, left ureter: abdominal part, left spermatic cord: abdomianl part, uterus (if enlarged), urinary bladder (if very full)
it is the ascending colon the middle is transferse colon and the left is descending
Left.
Right sided colon cancer takes place in the ascending and transverse colon, as left sided colon cancer is found in the descending and sigmoid colon. Right sided colon cancer is associated with more advanced disease when found and can spread more readily to LNs or peritoneal carcinomatosis. These tumors show more K-RAS mutations and microsatellite instability. Overall survival is lower in right sided colon cancer. Left sided colon cancer tend to cause more obstructive problems, often develop from polyps in early stages and tend to become metastatic to lung and liver sites. More information on the differences of right and left colon cancer can be found at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20010352
The three divisions of the colon are the ascending colon, the transverse colon, and the descending colon. These divisions are part of the large intestine and play a role in absorbing water and electrolytes from fecal material.
Here goes... :] This is how the nine regions are arranged:1 | 2 | 3----------4 | 5 | 6----------7 | 8 | 9 1. Right Hypochondriac: Liver, gall bladder, small intestine, ascending colon, transverse colon, right kidney 2. Epigastric: Esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, small intestine, transvers colon, right and left adrenal glands, pancreas, right and left kidneys, right and left ureters, spleen 3. Left Hypochondriac: Stomach, tip of liver, tail of pancreas, small intestines, transverse colon, descending colon, pancreas, left kidney, spleen 4. Right Lumbar: Tip of liver, gall bladder, small intestine, ascending colon, right kidney 5. Umbilical: Stomach, pancreas, small intestine, transverse colon, pancreas, right and left kidneys, right and left ureters 6. Left Lumbar: Small intestine, descending colon, tip of left kidney 7. Right Iliac: Small intestine, appendix, cecum and ascending colon; F- right ovary, right fallopian tube 8. Hypogastric: Small intestine, sigmoid colon, rectum, right and left ureters, urinary bladder; F- uterus, right and left ovaries, right and left Fallopian tubes; M- vas deferens, seminal vessicle, prostate 9. Left Iliac: Small intestine, descending colon, sigmoid colon; F- left ovary, left Fallopian tube Hope this helps anyone in anatomy! -Liberty
No, the descending colon is located on the left side of the abdomen. It starts at the splenic flexure near the spleen and runs down to the sigmoid colon in the lower left abdomen.
