I'm a veteran speaker of 22 years with experience in front of over 2,000 audiences. I've mentored a handful of up and coming speakers and here's my advice:
#1 Decide what market and audience your message and expertise would fit best
If you had one hour to share your best advice and strategies -- what would your message be and who would your ideal audience be? Business executives? College students? Middle school students?
#2 Develop your marketing strategies
Like any business, in the speaking business you have to sell yourself. The interesting thing in the speaking business is that your product is you, your credibility and life experiences plus your speech. If you have the world's greatest message and no one is hiring you to speak. Your message will not be heard. It's not enough to have a great message - you must know to package and sell it.
#3 - Invest in your dream by getting proven training
The best investment I ever made in getting my speaking career going was taking training from individuals or organizations with a proven track record. In both building a speaking business and helping OTHERS start their career. What courses should you look into? Depends on your audience… here are a few I recommend.
For schools, colleges, teachers, parents look into
YOUTH SPEAKER UNIVERSITY
For businesses and corporate organizations look into
EXPERTS ACADEMY
Hope this helps!

Your friend is right, most motivational speakers are just naturally talented people. You can take some speech classes to help improve your skills though. They are offered at any college.
