Both of these arts were created for different purposes by different people. Both arts focus on making an individual healthier and a better person. They require dedication and a lot of time to become proficient.
Karate focuses on striking while Aikido focuses more on joint manipulation considering Aikido comes from Daito Ryu Jujutsu. It depends on what the student wants to get out of an art.
