Hard styles rely on matching power against power. They are usually striking based. While skill is very important, a key part of any hard style is being able to generate enough power to cause harm to your target. Some examples include; western boxing, Karate, Tai Kwon Do, and Muay Thai.

Soft styles rely on methods that use your opponents power against him. They are usually grappling based. Soft styles will often incorporate such things as joint locks and throws that use ones opponents speed and power, and even weight, to complete the move. Some examples include; Jujitsu (also Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo), Aikido, and Tai Chi.
