With regard to FIFA World Cup football (soccer) the countries within Group D changes for each quadrennial championship. In 2010, the Group D countries were Australia, Germany, Ghana, and Serbia. There is a different Group D for Women's Soccer. For the 2011 Women's competition, the Group D countries are Brazil, Australia, Norway and Equatorial Guinea.

With regard to US Department of Commerce and its Bureau of Industry and Security, the countries in Group D are Controlled Countries and represent those having restrictions due to national security issues. They currently include Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burma, Cambodia, the People's Republic of China, Georgia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Libya, Macau, Moldova, Mongolia, North Korea, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
