The main duty of a sports photographer is to satisfy the requirements of the publication he or she is working for. And the most important thing the photographer must do is to meet deadlines.

My paper's sports desk has a 10:00 pm deadline for photos most nights of the week, 11:30 pm deadline on Friday night and 11:00 pm deadline on Saturday and Sunday nights. If a photographer takes the greatest sports photo in the history of the world but he submits it at 11:45 pm, it will probably never see print. If he misses deadlines often enough, he will soon find himself out of a job because good sports pictures that come in before deadline are better than dazzling sports pictures that come in after the paper is printing.
