You can get hurt doing almost anything. Often the biggest danger of getting hurt in Martial Arts is the "other guy" who may hurt you because he or she is not in full control when sparring. To minimize danger, warm-up and cool down properly, wear protective equipment, don't try to do things that are above your current capabilities and be aware of other students who may cause you harm. Above all if you see unsafe practices in your training, report them to the master or if you are a kid, tell your parents.

The biggest danger is naturally with getting hurt. Like all physical activity, there are risks to the body. While I have seen many bruises in my many years of karate training, the other injury I have seen have been knees. Believe it or not, I haven't ever seen blood in the dojo.

I have a few black belts, and i only have a few regrets. It can be painful and time consuming. Other than that, i think it is a great way to work out and discipline yourself.
