if car knocks due to no oil, the damage has already been done.do not continue to drive,as you will make it worse. the knocking sound is an indication of a bad main or crankshaft bearing. keep driving and you will sieze the bearings altogether and need a new crank if not a new block

More than likely it is a bad solenoid or starter. One little trick is to give the starter a couple of light taps (don't try to kill it) with a hammer or semi heavy blunt instrument. Sometimes as they get older they will seize and blunt force knocks it loose.
