There are various kicking techniques alowed. The majority of modern MMA organisations like the UFC follow the "Unified rules of MMA'. This rule set states that you may kick an opponent in the head or face but there are 'no kicks allowed to the head of a grounded opponent'. ie, If an opponent has 3 points (eg his knees and one hand) touching the ground, then you may not kcik him or her in the head.
