The security system prevents unauthorized operation of the car, your system has been tripped, and the car disabled. You will need to reset the security system to start it. If you have the original key you should be able to do it.
If the key for the Pontiac has a security chip in it as well, simply wait about fifteen minutes without doing anything and then your car should start. If the key does not have a security chip you may have to remove the battery to reset the system.
Clock & radio presets. Possibly the radio security code if the car is equipped with a security system on the radio.
Try grounding out pass key box to frame of car as you are cranking over the engine
Turn key on and leave it on for ten minutes then it will go out and it will start. It thinks it is being stolen. Just did it to mine. Seems to reset the security system.

If its the kind with the special metal piece in the key there is no way to reset it you have to change the whole ignition switch

I am not sure about the mercury sable but my car does that also, 2003 Pontiac grand am gt, it tells you how to reset in owners manual. I have to turn the key to the on position, wait about 10 minutes and the security light in the dash starts blinking, when that happens...turn the key off and try to start it. Hope this helps

Well that depends on what type of security light bulb it is. Is it for your car, backyard or porch? There are so many out today.
