It's because the Tampa Bay Rays won the season series with the Yankees and held almost all the cards. The only way the Yankees could have won the American League East title is if they won and the Rays lost.
As for the National League West race, there were three teams fighting for the last two playoff spots. A San Francisco Giants loss to the San Diego Padres plus a win by the Atlanta Braves would have meant 91-71 records for all three teams. As a result, there would have been a showdown between the Giants and the Padres on Monday, October 4, 2010 in San Diego to determine the winner of the West. The loser would have had to play the Braves on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 in Atlanta to determine the wild card.
