In 1900, there was one Marxist political party in Russia- the "Russian Social Democratic Labor Party". In the early 1900's, the party had a split over the setup of the party. The Bolsheviks, led by Lenin, favored a small party of professional revolutionaries, and the Mensheviks, led by Martov, favored a larger party of associated activists.

Eventually the Bolsheviks won out and took control, and banned the Mensheviks.
