An alternate theory about the introduction of prohibition is that the oil companies of the day wanted to secure a monopoly on vehicle fuel supply. All cars in the US ran on both petroleum based fuels and alcohol based fuels in the early 20th century and the introduction of prohibition stopped the production of both alcohol for human consumption and for use as a fuel.
