When surfers are talking to each other it's hard to use the Queen's English to explain things. It's much quicker to say 'reef break' than 'wave that breaks over a reef', it's universally understood by all surfers when you say 'it was really going off when the offshore came and cleaned up' and is much quicker than saying 'at the beach the conditions were wonderful when the wind that blew from the west made the waves cleaner'. It's just like algebra - shortening and simplifying.
Also, Surfing is now considered a culture, so it is seemly that it has its own language.
A beach break is a slang term for the places where waves break at a beach, especially useful for the sport of surfing.
